What are Viruses, Spyware and Adware? Viruses are
malicious programs that infect your PC and in turn use
your PC to infect others. Spyware are programs that spy
on your behaviour: for example to steal money from your
online bank account. Adware are programs that display
adverts on your computer, they are frequently secretly
bundled with free software, which the user chooses to
download. For simplicity the three types are referred
to, by the general term Malware.
The first and best line of defence against Malware is
not to download free software from the Internet unless
you are absolutely certain that the source is
trustworthy. The next but imperfect line of defence is
to have the following pieces of security software
installed:
- Anti-virus Software
- Anti-adware Software
Anti-virus software contains a database of known
viruses and you can use it to scan your computer. If the
anti-virus software finds a virus it will inform you and
in most cases it can remove it for you. It is important
to regularly update your anti-virus software. However
anti-virus software is not always able to find or remove
all viruses, as it can only remove those, which it
recognizes.
Because some users may wish to keep less aggravating
Adware on their computer in return for free services,
Anti-virus software does not find or remove Adware.
Instead you must use Anti-adware software, which works
in exactly the same principle as Anti-virus software.
Which Security Software to use? Some of the best
Security software is completely free. We recommend using
the following free pieces of software:
